What a stranger sees

Could a stranger find where your mom lives?

On people-search sites, a name and a city are often enough to pull up a home address, a phone number and the names of relatives. Here's how to check, how to remove it for free, and what has worked for us.

How they find you

Your details travel further than you think.

Data brokers

Collect your address, phone and relatives from public records and purchases.

→

People-search sites

Sell it back as a searchable profile, often for a few dollars.

→

Your phone

Scam calls and texts that know your name, street and family.

Why it matters

Scams sound real when they know your details.

The more of your information is listed, the easier it is for a scammer to name your street or a family member and sound convincing. Removing listings takes away one easy source.

On our own phone, Cloaked's Call Guard marked 62 of 77 calls as spam in 30 days, and its dashboard shows 942 spam calls blocked in total. Typical examples are fake package-delivery texts, unpaid-toll texts and callers who already know a family member's name.

What the latest research says

Removal services work. None of them catch everything.

77%

of records cleared by the best service in a 2025 university study of four paid removal services.

48%

cleared on average across all four. Results varied a lot by service.

Ongoing

Data brokers re-list people, so removal is a subscription job, not a one-time fix.
